Safe Sitter® Babysitting Course For Young Teens

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Channahon Fire Protection District is a Registered Safe Sitter® Teaching Site.

Safe Sitter® — Preparing Teens to Care with Confidence
For ages 11–16, this instructor-led course is packed with fun games, role-playing, and hands-on practice to prepare students to be safe whether they’re home alone, caring for siblings, or babysitting.

What they’ll learn:

🛡 Safety Skills – How to prevent unsafe situations and handle challenges like power outages or severe weather.

👶 Child Care Skills – Tips for managing behavior, understanding child development, and even diapering.

⛑ First Aid & Rescue Skills – Choking rescue, CPR, and how to assess and respond to injuries or illness.

💼 Life & Business Skills – How to screen babysitting jobs, set fair fees, and make a great first impression.

Give your teen the skills, safety knowledge, and confidence to care for others—and themselves—responsibly.

 

Child Care Skills:

  • – Age-appropriate activities for different age groups.
  • – Diapering techniques.
  • – Basic child feeding.
  • – Behavior management strategies.

Safety Skills:

  • – Home alone safety procedures.
  • – Fire escape plans.
  • – Weather emergency preparedness.
  • – Stranger danger awareness.

First Aid and Rescue Skills:

  • – Choking rescue for infants and children.
  • – Basic CPR techniques.
  • – Injury assessment and response.

Life and Business Skills:

  • – Screening potential babysitting jobs.
  • – Setting fees and discussing payment expectations.
  • – Communicating with parents and employers.
  • – Handling emergencies and knowing when to call for help.

Cost

$50.00 for Channahon Fire District Residents

Cost includes:

  • Class materials
  • Student handbook
  • Completion card
  • Safe Sitter® Kit (Bag with a flashlight, bandage dispenser, and Safe Sitter Important Numbers note pad)

White Safe Sitter® T-shirts can also be purchased (not required for class) for an additional $20.00. Adults sizes only, Small through X-Large.

Each student should bring their own lunch and drink for class. ***Please share if your child has allergies.  We do projects during class that may contain peanut butter and or milk.

Two ways to register:
1.Pay online:
Download and fill out the Safe Sitter registration form. Select the course date by clicking the dated box to the right.  Follow prompts through the link.

* For classes held in Channahon, click the Registration button. There is a platform fee/convenience fee for online payments.


2. In Person:
Download and fill out the Safe Sitter registration form. Bring the completed registration form and the non-refundable payment by registration deadline to the Channahon Fire Protection District Monday through Friday, 8am to 3pm. Registration forms and payments will not be accepted via mail, after 3pm or on weekends. Phone calls for pre-registration will not be accepted. Only cash (exact amount) or check will be accepted unless registering online.  **note.  you must have your form turned in to secure your spot in the class.

Class starts promptly at 8am. Please plan to arrive approximately 5-10 minutes early to sign in.
